The Rooftop Studio sits at the top of a historic building in the very heart of Funchal — one of the best-located addresses on the island. Step outside and you are immediately immersed in island life: colourful tiled buildings, the smell of bica coffee, fishermen unloading at the marina, and the Atlantic stretching to the horizon.
The Funchal Old Town (Zona Velha), famous for its painted doors and the lively Rua de Santa Maria, is a 5-minute walk. The Mercado dos Lavradores — Madeira's extraordinary covered market, packed with exotic tropical fruit, fresh fish and flowers — is under 10 minutes on foot. The cable car to Monte Palace, with its stunning Japanese garden and toboggan ride back down, is a 15-minute stroll uphill.
The ocean promenade stretches east and west directly below: rent a bike, walk to the Lido, or simply sit at a café and watch the cruise ships drift in. Funchal's main shopping street, Rua Dr. Fernão de Ornelas, is 8 minutes away on foot. For dinner, dozens of restaurants — from simple local tascas to fine dining — are within a 5-minute radius.
No elevator — the studio is on the top (4th) floor of a traditional old-town building, accessed by stairs. This is part of its authentic charm, and the view from the top makes every step worthwhile. Not recommended for guests with serious mobility issues.
There is no private parking. The nearest public car park is the Zona Velha car park, about a 5-minute walk. Street parking is very limited in central Funchal. For most guests we recommend arriving by taxi from the airport (around €20-25) and using public transport or taxis during your stay — the location makes a car unnecessary.

The nearest swimming area is the Lido complex, about 20 minutes along the ocean promenade on foot (or 5 min by taxi). Praia Formosa — a sandy beach — is about 25 min on foot westward. Funchal's old town promenade itself offers sea swimming access at the Barreirinha Lido (8 min walk).
You are spoilt for choice. O Tapassol (rooftop views, local food), Restaurante Gavião Novo (traditional Madeiran espetada), Tasca Literária (wine bar + petiscos) and dozens of cafés are all within a 10-minute walk. Rua de Santa Maria is lined with restaurants and is a 5-minute stroll from the studio.
Absolutely. The studio has fast Wi-Fi, a proper desk area, air conditioning and a fully equipped kitchen — everything you need to work comfortably. The central location means cafés, co-working spaces and restaurants are on your doorstep. And working with an ocean panorama visible from your desk is not something most offices can offer.
