Ponta Delgada is a tiny fishing village on Madeira's dramatic north coast, where the Atlantic hits sheer volcanic cliffs and the landscape is raw and untamed. The village centres on its natural seawater swimming pool — the Piscina Natural de Ponta Delgada — carved into the basalt rock shelf, which is one of the most remarkable swimming spots on the island. From Casa Del Mar, it's a 30-metre walk to the ocean.
The area is famous for its wild scenery, its authenticity, and the near-total absence of mass tourism. Local restaurants serve freshly caught espada (scabbardfish) and lapas (grilled limpets) — a meal you'll remember long after leaving Madeira. The famous Laurisilva Laurel Forest, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, begins just inland — the forest roads here are some of the most atmospheric on the island.
The north coast road connects Ponta Delgada to the spectacular Fanal plateau (40 km west), where ancient gnarled laurel trees grow from permanently fog-bathed meadows, and to São Vicente (15 km east) with its lava tube caves and boutique restaurants. Funchal is 41 km south via the VR1 expressway through the mountain tunnel — around 40 minutes. Casa Del Mar is the perfect retreat for travellers who want complete seclusion without giving up the ability to explore.
