Saudade Residence sits above Ribeira Brava on Madeira's dramatic southwest coast — an area that sees far fewer tourists than Funchal yet offers superior scenery and absolute privacy. The village of Ribeira Brava (8 min drive) has an excellent fish market open weekday mornings: the freshest espada (scabbard fish) and tuna at fisherman prices, often unavailable in Funchal restaurants.
The nearby Serra de Água valley is one of Madeira's most photographed drives — a 20-minute route through dense eucalyptus forest, irrigation levadas, and centuries-old quintas. For those wanting adventure, Paúl da Serra plateau (35 min drive) offers paragliding, mountain biking, and the most dramatic cloud inversions on the island — typically forming in late afternoon for extraordinary golden-hour photography. The Cabo Girão skywalk, one of the world's highest sea cliff viewpoints at 580m, is 25 minutes east.
The villa's private chef service can source ingredients directly from Ribeira Brava market on request. The house manager recommends Borda d'Água restaurant in the village for traditional espetada (beef skewers grilled over vine wood) — a 40-year family institution that fills up by 13:00 on weekends. Saudade Residence is located in Ribeira Brava, a charming coastal town on Madeira's south coast, around 25–30 minutes from Funchal. The town has a long pebble beach promenade, a 16th-century church and a relaxed local atmosphere, making it a great base for guests who want privacy and easy access to the west coast's levada walks and villages like Calheta and Ponta do Sol.
It's roughly 30–35 minutes by car from Cristiano Ronaldo Madeira International Airport, similar to or slightly closer than central Funchal depending on traffic.
The town has a beach promenade, local restaurants, a small market and a historic church — it's also a good starting point for exploring Madeira's west coast.
A car is recommended, as it makes it much easier to explore the west coast, levada trails and other towns along Madeira's south coast.
