Within 10 minutes on foot you can reach the Cathedral, the famous Rua de Santa Maria with its painted doors, the Mercado dos Lavradores, the Jardim Municipal, the cable car station to Monte, and the entire seafront promenade stretching in both directions.
The Funchal Old Town (Zona Velha) is a living neighbourhood, not a museum: local fishermen and families share the streets with visitors, tiny restaurants serve espetada and poncha, and the famous painted-door art project on Rua de Santa Maria creates a permanent open-air gallery just metres from your door. In the evenings the waterfront fills with locals — it is the authentic Madeira that most package tourists never find.
