Sunset cruises in Madeira — the basics
Madeira sits at 32° north latitude — far enough south that Atlantic sunsets are spectacular year-round, and the sea is calm enough for evening boat trips on most days. Sunset cruises depart from Marina do Funchal, usually 1.5 to 2 hours before sunset, and head west or south along the coastline where the views back to the island's amphitheatre of mountains and city lights are extraordinary.
You can choose between a private charter (just your group) or joining a shared cruise with other passengers. Both have their merits — shared cruises are more affordable and social; private charters give you total flexibility on timing, route and atmosphere.
🌅 Best months: May to October offer the warmest evenings and calmest seas. July and August sunsets fall around 8:30–9pm local time — ideal for an after-dinner cruise feeling.
Your sunset cruise options in Madeira
Private Yacht — Starfisher
🛥️ Up to 12 guests · 2.5 hours · from €500 totalThe Starfisher is a sleek, comfortable motor yacht with a sun deck and covered seating, departing from Marina do Funchal. For a group of 4–12 people, a private sunset charter works out at €40–125 per person — excellent value for an exclusive experience. The crew speaks English and Portuguese and knows the best spots to watch the sun set along Madeira's south coast.
Includes: welcome drink (poncha or wine), light snacks, music of your choice, captain and crew.
Private Zodiac RIB
⚡ 2–6 guests · 2 hours · from €250 totalThe Zodiac is a rigid inflatable boat — faster, lower to the water and more thrilling than a yacht. You feel the sea spray, the speed and the immediate Atlantic. Perfect for smaller groups who want something adventurous rather than luxurious. The Zodiac can also access smaller coves and spots that larger boats can't reach.
Includes: life jackets, poncha welcome drink, experienced local skipper.
What to expect on a Madeira sunset cruise
Every cruise is slightly different depending on sea conditions, season and your skipper's local knowledge, but a typical 2.5-hour Madeira sunset cruise looks something like this:
- Departure (t=0): Board at Marina do Funchal, introductions, safety briefing. The skipper checks conditions and sets course.
- First 30 minutes: Motor west along Funchal's seafront — you see the cable car, Sé cathedral, and the amphitheatre of mountains behind the city from the water. Welcome drinks served.
- Middle section: Heading further west, the sun begins to descend. Snacks served. Dolphins are often spotted in this stretch — Madeira's waters have resident pods year-round.
- Sunset moment: The boat pauses offshore as the sun drops below the horizon. The sky turns gold, orange and pink behind the silhouette of the city. Funchal's lights begin to appear.
- Return: Back into the marina as full darkness falls, usually around 1.5–2 hours after departure.
Will I see dolphins?
Madeira is one of the best places in Europe for dolphin watching. The waters around the island are home to several resident dolphin species including common dolphins, bottlenose dolphins and spotted dolphins, and sightings are frequent year-round. Most sunset cruises do not specifically route for dolphins, but encounters are common on the western approaches from Funchal.
If dolphin and whale watching is your primary goal, a dedicated morning wildlife cruise (2–3 hours, departing 8am) is more focused. But sunset trips frequently deliver unexpected sightings as a bonus.
Practical tips before you go
- What to wear: A light jacket or fleece — it gets noticeably cooler once you're offshore, even in summer. Bring a second layer.
- Footwear: Non-slip soles. Flip-flops are not ideal on a moving boat.
- Sea sickness: If you're prone, take medication 1 hour before departure. The Zodiac has more movement than the Starfisher.
- Camera: The light during a Madeira sunset from the water is exceptional. Bring your best camera — and a waterproof case if on the Zodiac.
- Booking: Book via WhatsApp 3–5 days ahead in summer. Last-minute slots do come up — ask via message even if the listing shows full.
- Cancellation: Trips are weather-dependent. If conditions are unsafe, you'll be offered a new date or refund.
