Spearfishing & Offshore Fishing in Madeira — Complete Guide
Madeira's underwater world is exceptional. The island sits in the middle of the Atlantic, surrounded by deep, clean, warm water with 20–30 metre visibility year-round. The volcanic seabed creates complex reef structures that shelter a remarkable diversity of fish species — from large pelagic predators passing offshore to resident reef species in the shallower coastal zones.
Spearfishing in Madeira requires a Portuguese licence (licença de pesca submarina). If you don't have one, our team will guide you through the application process — it's straightforward for EU and non-EU citizens. Beginners are welcome on supervised sessions where our certified instructor accompanies you throughout the dive.
Species you can target around Madeira
Black scabbardfish (peixe espada): Madeira's most iconic fish, caught at depth. Deep-line fishing from the boat.
Parrotfish, grouper, moray: Classic reef species for spearfishing in shallower coastal areas.
Bluefish, barracuda: Fast, exciting target species in the 5–15 metre zone.

Best season for fishing in Madeira
Madeira's mild climate means fishing is possible year-round. However, the best months for big-game offshore fishing are June through October when warm Atlantic currents bring marlin and tuna close to the island. Spearfishing conditions are best from May through November when water visibility is at its peak (25–30m). Winter months (December–February) offer excellent reef fishing and are less crowded.
We provide all equipment: spearguns, wetsuits, masks, fins, weight belts, and the Starfisher 34 as your support vessel. Your catch can be cooked on board by our crew or taken back to your accommodation. Some of Funchal's best restaurants will prepare your catch for a fee — ask us for recommendations.
