Funchal Old Town Guide 2026 — Painted Doors, Restaurants & Hidden Gems
A local's guide to Zona Velha — the most atmospheric corner of Funchal, full of art, history and great food.
Funchal old town — known locally as Zona Velha (the Old Zone) — is the historic heart of Madeira's capital. Centred on the cobbled Rua de Santa Maria, it's where fishermen once lived, where the city began, and where you'll find the real character of Funchal away from the tourist promenade. Come here for the painted doors, the best local restaurants, and an evening atmosphere that's hard to match anywhere on the island.
The Famous Painted Doors
The painted doors of Funchal are one of the island's most beloved attractions. In 2010, the Arte Portas Abertas (Open Doors Art) project transformed over 200 doorways along Rua de Santa Maria into an open-air gallery. Each door is painted by a different artist — local Madeiran artists alongside names from Portugal, Brazil, Italy and beyond.
The doors range from hyper-realistic portraits of fishermen to abstract geometric patterns. The art changes as new doors are added and old paintings refreshed. There's no map or tour needed — simply walk the street and discover them. Entry is completely free.
Best time to see them: Morning light is best for photography. The street is quieter before 10am.

Getting to Funchal Old Town
From the hotel zone (Lido/Estrada Monumental): take bus route 1 or 2 from Lido towards Funchal centre. From the cruise ship terminal, it's a pleasant 15-minute walk east along the seafront promenade. By taxi, expect to pay €5–8 from most Funchal hotels.
Parking is limited in the old town itself. The nearest car park is at Rua Dr. Brito Câmara (paid, €1.20/hour). Walking from the city centre is the best option — it's flat and the seafront walk is beautiful.
