Madeira Wine
Madeira Wine Guide 2026 — Types, Tastings & Where to Buy
Everything you need to know about the island's most famous export — from dry Sercial to luscious Malmsey.
Madeira wine is one of the world's most extraordinary wines — a fortified wine that improves with age almost indefinitely, produced on a tiny Atlantic island for over 500 years. Explorers took it on long sea voyages, American Founding Fathers toasted independence with it, and Napoleon reportedly loved it. Today it's one of Madeira's greatest treasures.
The 4 Types of Madeira Wine
Madeira wine comes in four main styles, named after the grape variety and ranging from bone dry to intensely sweet:
🍷 Sercial — Dry
The driest style of Madeira wine, made from Sercial grapes grown at high altitude. Pale amber, high acidity, nutty and citrus notes. Perfect as an aperitif or with smoked fish and soups. Minimum 10 years ageing for the best bottles.
🍷 Verdelho — Medium-Dry
The most versatile style. Medium-dry with honey, smoke and dried fruit notes. Excellent with tapas, mild cheeses and as an all-round table wine. Historically the most exported Madeira wine style.
🍷 Bual (Boal) — Medium-Sweet
Rich and caramel-like, with notes of coffee, fig and dried fruit. Pairs beautifully with mature cheeses, desserts and dark chocolate. One of the most complex Madeira wine styles.
🍷 Malmsey (Malvasia) — Sweet
The sweetest and most famous Madeira wine. Deep amber, rich, luscious — notes of caramel, orange peel and roasted nuts. The classic dessert wine of Madeira. Shakespeare mentioned it in Henry V. Drink with crème brûlée, fruit tarts or simply on its own.
Best Wine Tastings in Funchal
Funchal has several excellent venues for Madeira wine tastings:
The most famous Madeira wine experience. A historic 18th-century warehouse in central Funchal with guided tours (45 min, €15–25/person including tasting). You can taste 3–5 wines and buy bottles at the shop. Open Mon–Fri 10:00–18:30, Sat 10:00–13:00.
Family-owned winery in Câmara de Lobos, 10km west of Funchal. Known for exceptional vintage wines. Less touristy than Blandy's, with a more authentic experience. Their 15-year Verdelho is outstanding.
Old town Funchal gem. Small shop with incredible old vintages going back to the 1800s. One of the few places you can taste wines over 50 years old. A must for serious wine lovers.
The Estufagem Process — What Makes Madeira Wine Unique
Madeira wine gets its extraordinary character from the estufagem (heating) process. After fermentation, the wine is heated to 45–50°C for several months, mimicking the effect of long sea voyages in hot ship holds. This caramelises the sugars, creates complex flavours, and makes the wine virtually indestructible — Madeira wine is the only wine in the world that genuinely improves when exposed to heat and oxygen.

How to Drink Madeira Wine
Unlike most wines, Madeira benefits from being served at room temperature. Dry styles (Sercial, Verdelho) can be lightly chilled. Sweet styles (Bual, Malmsey) are best at 16–18°C. Once opened, Madeira wine keeps for months — simply cork the bottle and store upright.
Locals drink Poncha — a cocktail made with Aguardente (sugar cane spirit), honey, lemon and orange — far more than Madeira wine. If you want the true local drinking experience, order a Poncha in a bar in Câmara de Lobos, the fishing village where it originated.
