New Year Fireworks — Guinness World Record
Funchal's New Year fireworks are officially the world's largest, launched simultaneously from dozens of points around the bay. Guinness World Record holder. The bay glows for nearly 10 minutes. Book accommodation months in advance — the city fills to capacity.
Epiphany (Dia de Reis)
The Feast of the Three Kings marks the end of the Christmas season. Traditional singing groups (grupos de cantares) perform in Funchal and villages. Local families share the traditional bolo rei cake. A deeply Madeiran tradition.
Panelo Feast — Seixal
Intimate village feast in the small north-coast town of Seixal. Traditional food cooked in panela (clay pots), folk music, and dancing. One of the most authentic local events on the island — very few tourists.

Carnival da Madeira
Madeira's biggest winter celebration. Funchal transforms into a sambadrome with dazzling costumes, samba troupes and decorated floats. Grand Allegorical Parade: 14 Feb. Cortejo Trapalhão (humorous parade open to all): 17 Feb. Events run nightly across the two weeks.
Compadres Feast — Santana
Traditional pre-Carnival celebration unique to Santana. Life-size rag dolls called compadres and comadres are hung in the streets and later burned in a mock trial. Dates: 5, 7, 8 and 12 February 2026.

XXXIX Madeira Music Festival — Barroco a Norte

Freedom Day (Dia da Liberdade)
Portugal's national holiday commemorating the 1974 Carnation Revolution. Processions, concerts and public events across the island. Many Madeirans wear carnations. A moving and historically significant celebration.
💡 Tip: May is Madeira's busiest month. Book accommodation for the Flower Festival at least 2–3 months in advance, especially in Funchal. Prices can double during parade weekends.

Festa da Flor — Madeira Flower Festival
Madeira's most iconic event — a month-long explosion of colour. Funchal fills with floral carpets, installations and decorated streets. Highlights: Children's Wall of Hope (1 May), Allegorical Parade (3 May and 17 May — two parades in 2026!), Classic Car Floral Parade (10 May), Flower Fashion Show at Quinta Magnólia (16–17 May), Floral Sculptures (21–31 May). Most events are free.
Madeira Classic Car Revival
Four days celebrating the most beautiful vintage and classic vehicles in the region. Period costumes, awards banquet, speed competition on the historic Caminho dos Pretos route in Monte (11–12 Apr). A glamorous, nostalgic weekend in the heart of Funchal.
Palheiro Gardens Golf Classic
Golf competition set within the stunning Palheiro Gardens during the Flower Festival. One of the most scenic golf events in Portugal, surrounded by Madeira's extraordinary flora.

Atlantic Festival — Fireworks & Culture
Month-long celebration welcoming summer. International Fireworks Competition every Saturday (6, 13, 20, 27 Jun) — teams from different countries compete with spectacular pyromusical shows over the bay. Plus: multimedia shows, circus performances, concerts, dance and the Regional Arts Week. All free.
Sixteenth Century Market — Machico
Machico was the first settlement in Madeira (1420). This historical market recreates 16th-century life with period costumes, traditional crafts, food and entertainment. A fantastic family event in one of Madeira's most historic towns.
Ultra Skyrunning Madeira — Santana
High-altitude trail running race in the mountains above Santana. Athletes race through UNESCO laurisilva forest and across volcanic ridges. Spectacular for spectators as well as participants.
Santo António — Village Festas Begin
The feast of Saint Anthony marks the start of the summer arraial season — outdoor village parties with music, sardines, wine and dancing. Smaller villages across the island host their own versions throughout June and July.

The most glamorous classic car gathering on the island, set in the beautiful gardens of Quinta Magnólia. Period-costumed extras recreate an early 20th-century atmosphere. Possibly the most photogenic event in Madeira's calendar.
Parish Feasts (Arraiais) — North & West Coast
Every parish celebrates its patron saint in summer. São Vicente, Porto Moniz and Calheta host some of the liveliest arraiais — outdoor parties with folk music, barbecues, fireworks and dancing until dawn. No entrance fee.

Rali Vinho da Madeira
One of Portugal's most prestigious rally events, held on closed mountain roads across the island. Spectacular stages through the laurisilva forest and along coastal cliffs. Free to watch from designated spectator zones — an incredible experience.
Festa de Nossa Senhora da Natividade — Faial
Major religious and cultural festival honouring the patron saint of Faial. National and regional artists perform live, religious procession, fireworks, traditional cuisine and dancing. One of the biggest village feasts on the north coast.

Festival do Vinho Madeira — Wine Festival
Madeira's most important cultural festival. Funchal transforms into an open-air wine celebration with concerts, exhibitions, parades and tastings. The grape harvest (vindima) in Estreito de Câmara de Lobos is a deeply moving experience — locals stomp grapes by foot as their ancestors did. Wine concerts in historic quintas at sunset.
Columbus Festival — Porto Santo
Porto Santo recalls the life of Christopher Columbus, who lived on the island before his great voyages. Period costumes, caravels in the harbour, historical re-enactments and concerts. A ferry trip from Funchal (2.5 hours) is part of the adventure.

Madeira Nature Festival
Six days celebrating Madeira's extraordinary natural heritage. Activities for all levels: guided levada walks, mountain biking, paragliding, sailing, diving, kayaking and canyoning. Photography exhibitions and gastronomy demonstrations in central Funchal. An excellent way to explore hidden corners of the island.
Lord of Miracles Festival — Machico
Commemorates the devastating floods of 9 October 1803 that swept through Madeira. A profoundly moving religious procession and feast in Machico. The crucifix believed to have miraculously survived the flood is carried through the streets. One of the most emotionally significant events on the island.

Chestnut Festival — Curral das Freiras
The Valley of the Nuns fills with the scent of roasting chestnuts on São Martinho Day. The village produces chestnut soup, chestnut bread, chestnut liqueur and chestnut ice cream. One of Madeira's most charming and delicious local festivals — an absolute must if you're visiting in autumn.
Madeira Dig — Music & Arts
Annual music and arts festival bringing international and local acts to Funchal. Eclectic mix of genres. The Congress Centre and surrounding venues host concerts, exhibitions and talks. A cultural highlight of the quieter autumn season.

Funchal Christmas & New Year Celebrations
Funchal is one of Europe's finest destinations for Christmas and New Year. From early December: switch-on of spectacular Christmas lights turning the entire city amphitheatre into a glowing backdrop; Christmas markets at Mercadinho de Natal; Aldeia Etnográfica recreating traditional Madeiran scenes; Missas do Parto (midnight masses with food and music). Culminates in the Guinness World Record fireworks on 31 December.

The first of Funchal's two record-breaking fireworks displays. Launched simultaneously from dozens of points around the bay on 3 December, this display is officially the largest Christmas fireworks show in the world. Spectacular from any viewpoint around the harbour — completely free.
📅 Planning tip: The best months to combine festivals with good weather are May (Flower Festival, warm and dry), September (Wine Festival, beautiful light) and December (Christmas magic, mild 18°C). For the least crowds, January–March offers hiking, music and Carnival at much lower prices.
